It's Almost Time . . .

On January 26th, we will release our annual ranking of the Top 100 U.S. Patent Firms. The list is powered by the very same database that makes our prosecution tools so robust. In fact, we compiled the Top 100 using Juristat Business Intelligence, a tool you can experience on our free trial

Although it's not time for the official release, we thought it'd be fun to share some preliminary statistics about the Top 100 Patent Firms. However, before we do that, it's useful to review our eligibility requirements and methodology.

Eligibility & Methodology

The Juristat Top 100 is unique in that it considers both volume and performance. Our ranking is based on four key metrics, as measured from July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015. These metrics are:

  • Number of Applications Filed
  • Allowance Rate
  • Average Number of Office Actions Before Allowance
  • Average Time to Allowance

All metrics herein, apart from Applications Filed, are based on public applications disposed between July 1, 2014 and June 30, 2015. Applications Filed, as you might have guessed, is based on published applications filed during that time. We excluded foreign priority applications and design applications from our calculations. Finally, to qualify for inclusion, a firm must have filed a minimum of 200 applications during that time.

Preliminary Statistics

Below are some interesting averages from the Top 100 Patent Firms. For the sake of comparison, we've also provided the averages for all eligible firms (top 100 firms + all remaining firms with at least 200 filed applications).

Average Number of Applications Filed

On average, the Top 100 Patent Firms filed 522 applications between July 1, 2014 and June 30, 2015. The average for Eligible Firms was 442.

Average Number of Applications Disposed

On average, the Top 100 Patent Firms had 664 applications disposed. The average for Eligible Firms was 576.

Average Allowance Rate

As for allowance rate, the Top 100 Patent Firms clocked in at 76.3% while Eligible Firms achieved a 74.4%. The overall USPTO average hovers around 70%.

Average Number of Office Actions to Allowance

On average, it takes the Top 100 Patent Firms 2.08 office actions to reach allowance. It takes Eligible Firms 2.14 office actions to reach allowance. Considering the amount of data used to generate these numbers, that's remarkably close.

Average Number of Months to Allowance

Lastly, the Top 100 Patent Firms require, on average, one fewer month to reach allowance.

Stay Tuned

As you can deduce from these comparisons, the rankings are incredibly close. Be sure to check back on January 26th for the official release of the Juristat Top 100 Patent Firms. Until then, I hope you'll check out our free trial. In doing so, you can see exactly where our data comes from.
